Impressionism: Paintings Collected by European Museums is the largest Impressionist exhibition ever presented in the Southeast, and Atlanta is the show's only East Coast venue. Included is an unprecedented selection over sixty paintings from thirteen European countries by such preeminent artists as Cassat, Cézanne, Degas, Monet, Renoir, and Van Gogh. The show opens at the High February 23 and will be on view through May 16 before traveling to Seattle and Denver. Visitors to the show will enjoy a comprehensive look at Impressionism and will learn of the movement's historic struggle for acceptance, a story never fully told in the United States.
Impressionism was not always as widely known and loved as it is today. Initially, viewers found Impressionist paintings radical, even laughable. It was only through the efforts of a few visionary individuals-collectors, dealers, artists, and museum professionals-that Impressionist paintings began to find their way into European museums around the turn of the twentieth century. This show offers a fascinating look at the history of collecting Impressionism: who collected it, when, and why-and why not.
Among the thirty-nine museums lending Impressionist paintings to this show are such prestigious public collections as: The National Gallery, London; the National Gallery of Scotland, the Musée d'Orsay and the Musée du Petit-Palais, Paris; the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lyon; the Galleria d'Arte Moderna, Florence; the Petit Palais-Modern Art Museum, Geneva; the Wallraf-Richartz Museum , Cologne; the Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart; the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm; the Nasjonalgalleriet Oslo; and the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest.
The managing curator of this exhibition is the High's Deputy Director and Chief Curator, Michael Shapiro. Art historian, Ann Dumas, is Guest Curator of the show.
