Painting with Light: The Impressionist Age on Film
films| tours | family programs |films|volunteer
Designed to complement the special exhibition, this series of three films celebrates the sun-splashed look and the fresh, spontaneous spirit of Impressionist art. Lust for Life features a superb Kirk Douglas performance as Vincent van Gogh, a harsh and clumsy mystic whose anguished personal life yielded some of the world’s most renowned and beautiful art. The film’s landscapes, interiors and people are designed to evoke Van Gogh’s paintings. Jean Renoir, son of Impressionist master Pierre-Auguste Renoir, crafted French Can-Can as a nostalgic valentine to the Belle Epoque Paris that his father loved. The great Jean Gabin plays the impressario who founded the Moulin Rouge, where high society and low met and applauded the dazzling can-can dancers. A Sunday in the Country bathes the French countryside in Impressionist light and presents a touching family drama. A dear old painter (Louis Ducreux) is visited by his bourgeois son (Michel Aumont) and his strong-willed, black-sheep daughter (Sabine Azema), and is prompted to reflect on the path his life has taken.
Series tickets: three films for $12 members; $15 nonmembers; single tickets at the door, if available, $6.
